Meet Our Defyers
Kate Owens is a New York based actor/singer/clown/filmmaker. The most exciting part about creating art right now is the opportunity to express our inner lives in a world that is becoming more open to female artists, artists of color, and LGBTQ artists. She lives to make people laugh and believes we need it now more than ever. She is interested in exploring the truth of human nature, and dreams of establishing a touring clown/comedy group that empowers people to dream big and fail even bigger. What draws her to collaborate with a platform like Aye Defy is the opportunity to work with progressive artists who seek to tell the stories we lack. Through Aye Defy, Kate believes we can empower ourselves - and other artists - to live authentically and to create with purpose.

MaYaa Boateng is an actor, solo-performer, and all-around Citizen-Artist concerned with healing and transformation within her community. An MFA recipient from NYU’s Graduate Acting Program (’17) where she learned the term "Citizen-Artist", MaYaa does not take this title lightly. For her, identifying as Citizen-Artist, is to boldly take on the responsibility of reflecting on society and then actively responding when there is a call. For MaYaa, there is no separation between being an artist and being a socially-conscious human being—the two can and must coexist. Currently, MaYaa is working on expanding her solo show: Visions from Eartha: A One-Woman Theatrical Mixtape, which had its debut at NYU Grad Acting last winter. Other credits include: The Village of Vale (Lincoln Center); Good Men Wanted (New York Stage and Film, Powerhouse); Julius Caesar (Shakespeare in the Park, The Public).
